This is downtown Virginia City. Gold was first discovered here in 1859. Virginia City was home to the Comstock lode of gold and silver. At one time the city had 30,000 residents. Today it consists of shops, casinos and restaurants. An early miner named the place Old Virginny after his home state of Virginia and the name stuck and changed to Virginia City. Much of the town was burned down in 1875 but it was rebuilt. Many of the buildings date back to this time.
