Hinkley is in the Mojave Desert. Many times, while driving old Route 66, we passed a road that said Hinkley. One day curiosity got the better of us, and we drove to Hinkley. The movie wasn't actually filmed in Hinkley, but in Boron.

There are still lawsuits going on in Hinkley. After the problems with contaminating the groundwater, the state OK'd a plan to spray the water/chromium mixture on crops instead. Read about it here.

There are many abandoned structures in Hinkley, and very few people living there; but then, much of the desert is host to countless structures abandoned within the last 150 years by people who tried to live in its challenging environment.
