a Hike up San Antonio Canyon

This is another one of those adventures I have talked about doing for a few
years and we finally got around to it. When we drive up the mountain to
Baldy Village or the ski area I have always seen an old road bed down below
the road we drive up on. Soooo we had to hike it. HaHa... As it turns out
the hike was really pretty neat. You can see the roadbed has been eaten away
here by the water.

The roadbed straight ahead has just been completely obliterated. Talking
to friends who grew up in the area it happened in the 1968 floods. The forces
that had to come though this canyon to do this type of damage are just
hard to imagine.

In areas where the old roadbed was not damaged by the waters it has been
ravaged by other forces of nature. Look at the trees and brush growing right
up through the pavement and some damaged by fire.

This little stream is the one that just blew out the road. It's hard to imagine
it getting big enough to do it but it happens. When they built the new road
they built it higher up the canyon walls. HaHa wonder why? In the recent
storms we had here this little stream claimed 3 lives.

When we saw the first rusted out car at the bottom of the hill we thought it
was an accident where some poor fool went crashing over the edge of the road
and down the hill. But we soon realized that people had used it as a way to
get rid if cars. They also had many big parts missing. So we speculated that
they were likely stolen cars that had been stripped and then taken up to the mountain
road and pushed over the edge.
