The Mission San Diego was the first of the 21 great missions built in California
by the Spanish. The mission was founded in 1769. The 21 missions along California's
coast were all built within a days walk of each other.

Each of the missions were allowed to crumble and fall apart. Each of them
are in some state of restoration.

Every mission had a bell tower and each was unique.

The chapels were all quite large and beautiful.

Here they are working on unearthing the past. Behind his feet you see a rock
wall about 8" tall.
They would lay a foundation of rock like this, then build the adobe walls on
top of the rock. As the adobe would deteriorate and go back to dirt everything
would be covered up. He is sifting looking for artifacts.
