The Fire Tower Volunteer group got an opportunity to tour Southern California
Edison's hydro plants on the Santa Ana River. This is the inside of plant #2 which
went on-line in 1898. When this plant originally went on-line that people that
ran it lived in the canyon. Today it runs unmanned. The plant was spotless.

This is a close up of the Pelton wheel. Water is shot at this wheel to get
it to turn which then turns the generators.

In order to get to the plant you have to take a rugged dirt road that
required vehicles with high ground clearance and 4 wheel drive. Many parts
of this road are under water during the rainy season when the Seven Oaks
Dam has water behind it.

This is the front side of the Seven Oaks Dam. It is an earthen dam with
a layer of rock protecting it. Then there is a layer of concrete over the
rocks to hold the rock in place. The road actually has switchbacks to drive up
and over the dam.
