In the local auto club magazine (AAA) they had an article on things at local Southern California universities and things to see and do on their grounds. This arboretum is about 6 miles away. The gardens cover about 10 acres in total. The first two pictures are in the succulent area.

The gardens were started in the 1980's by professor John R. Rodman. There are many plants indigenous to the area. The photos were taken in the middle of January and flowers and trees are just starting to bud.

The bees are out doing their thing to pollinate the plants. They don't always cooperate to hold still long enough for me to get their picture. My camera has the digital camera lag. You click the button and it takes it a bit before it actually snaps the photo.

This bud is just about ready burst open with color. The gardens were kind of hard to find but well worth finding.

I am told this is called a no no tree. I saw one for the first time at the Getty Center. By planting them at the Getty Center they don't have any birds around to mess up the place. Birds will not come around an area that has these trees. They have these large thorns on the branches and the trunk so no bird can land on them.
