My mothers family is from the Crisfield Maryland area and my mother and brother
are buried there. I also had pictures my grandfather had taken in 1967 at the
Crisfield Hard Crab Derby so we decided to visit there to see the Crab Derby
and also visit my mother, brother and other relatives. Crisfield has been or
was billed as the seafood capitol of the world. A fairly substantial part of
the downtown area is built on oyster shells. I was only there a couple times
as a child and still have vivid memories of walking around a street corner and
there were crabs coming out of a basket and all over the street. |

This is one of the skiffs that competed in the Smith Island Skiff races. The
city to this day still depends a great deal on seafood but today oysters are
brought in from other parts of the world and shucked in Crisfield. That way
they can be sold as being from the Chesapeake bay. There also are no longer
any large picking houses for the Maryland Blue Crab. |

As part of the Derby they have the crab races. The boat in the lower left
is practicing for the boat docking contest that takes place. They really
take this competition seriously. The bottom picture is of one of the older
family plots. The older plots were typically right on the premises instead
of a large cemetery. We went driving down somebody's long driveway. As we
got out they were out working in the yard just watching us. I went up and
told them who I was and explained what I was looking for. The man extended
his hand which I shook as he stated well then we must be relatives. Heh,
that's how it is in a small town. |
