Colonial Williamsburg is the restored and reconstructed colonial capital of
Virginia. It is 300 acres in size. You can spend plenty of time visiting the
various buildings and listening to and watching various historical
re-enactments. One day we went to listen to Patrick Henry give a speech. They
go to great lengths to make sure everything is historically accurate and some
of it sure is different from what I learned in school. While listening to
important speakers of the time giving public addresses I was surprised how many
time the word "God" was used such as in "your God given rights" when trying to
get the common man to rally behind going against England. The building to the
left it the governors palace. Hmm separation of church and state? God given
rights... |

While there are a few buildings that are restored most are reconstructed.
This 18th century building was an apothecary. Colonial apothecaries
practiced as doctors. Today they use it as a store to sell refreshments.
Notice the British flag. The time period represented in the city is just
before the revolutionary war. |

The various actors all all very accurate in their dress. For example you
will not see any zippers and the clothes this gent is wearing are wool.
One night we went to a presentation on black music. They showed how music
was used to help them keep a slow steady rhythm will working the fields in
order to be able to make it through the day. Then they demonstrated what
might have taken place around their encampment at night after a hard days
work. |
