Cadillac Ranch is an art sculpture in Amarillo Texas. There are many stories I
have read and heard about how and why it started. The one story I like is that
Millionaire Stanley Marsh went to trade in his Cadillac and the dealer gave
him such a lousy offer on a trade in he said I'd rather bury it in the ground.
The art work was created in 1974 by a group from the Ant Farm. |

It was meant to show the evolution of the Cadillac with tail fins. It was
originally a couple miles closer into town. Spray painting is encouraged as
you can see this young man doing here. It was moved due to the growing town
encroaching on it. |

The cars are occasionally repainted for different reasons. Sometimes for TV
commercials, once for the Mr. Marsh's wife's birthday and sometimes just
to provide a fresh canvas for the people to paint. The time I stopped each
car had a wild bright base coat of a different color. There have been many
different songs written that mention Cadillac ranch. The one I am most
familiar with was by Bruce Springsteen. |
