Cadillac Ranch

Cadillac Ranch is an art sculpture in Amarillo Texas. There are many stories I have read and heard about how and why it started. The one story I like is that Millionaire Stanley Marsh went to trade in his Cadillac and the dealer gave him such a lousy offer on a trade in he said I'd rather bury it in the ground. The art work was created in 1974 by a group from the Ant Farm.

It was meant to show the evolution of the Cadillac with tail fins. It was originally a couple miles closer into town. Spray painting is encouraged as you can see this young man doing here. It was moved due to the growing town encroaching on it.

The cars are occasionally repainted for different reasons. Sometimes for TV commercials, once for the Mr. Marsh's wife's birthday and sometimes just to provide a fresh canvas for the people to paint. The time I stopped each car had a wild bright base coat of a different color. There have been many different songs written that mention Cadillac ranch. The one I am most familiar with was by Bruce Springsteen.
