The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is an annual event that now takes place over 10
days in early October. The first was in 1972 and happened in February. In 1972
it had the
largest number of balloons ever assembled in the world, 19. Today they can
have as many as 800 balloons go up during the mass assertion which takes place
over a 2 hour time period. Of course ballooning is sensitive to weather and in
particular winds. Both nights we were there the evening event got canceled due
to winds. |

There are balloons of every shape and size. There were flying cows, flying
beer mugs, flying Nemo, and even a flying Smokey Bear. You can go down on
the launch field and wander around the balloons while they are getting them
ready to launch. It really gets pretty exciting down on the field with all
the activity. |

The crowds on the weekends are massive and they encourage you to take
public transportation options they have available. We were lucky and both
mornings we were there the balloons launched. |
