The last time I was at Bolsa Chica was in 2007. It is a great place to practice taking pictures of birds in flight. On this day there were a lot of Snowy Egret's and some Pelicans but I didn't see any Blue Herons.

Panning along with a bird in flight and getting them in the picture and sharp is something that takes a bit of practice so I like to get out and try it on occasion. Similar to shooting race cars but in this case you are using a fast shutter speed to freeze movement. I loved watching the Pelicans how they just glide inches above the water.

The Snowy Egrets just look so odd how they curl their neck up for flight and then those orange colored feet. There is an area with a walking bridge over the water and it was just lined with photographers. You should hear the cameras go crazy when the ducks would take off like the picture below left. Digital cameras make it so easy to shoot hundreds of pictures and just delete the bad ones. With film you would go broke getting them all developed only to throw many of them away.
