Grand Canyon Caverns are on Route 66 between Seligman and Kingman Arizona.
Since Karen can be a bit claustrophobic we typically avoid caverns unless we
know they are big. Well, we decided to stop and see what we could find out.
Again, since we work at a Route 66 Museum we like to be able to give people
information first hand. So we decided to take the tour. The caverns were
discovered in 1927 by Walter Peck. He and some friends went back to the hole
Walter had discovered and lowered somebody in by rope. 150 feet down the
cowboy saw sparkles that he of course assumed were gold. |

The caverns have changed hands a few times over the year with folks always
finding a way to make money on them. The room to the left is a fall out
shelter with drums of water and food. Part of the cold war era civil
defense. |

There is an archway where people have been married. At one time before
paths and stairs were put in they used to lower tourists down by rope and
then pull them back up. They came to be known as Dope on a Rope tours.
All in all the caverns were worth the price of admission and you get a
nice talk on history, geology and some humor. |
