Laughlin Nevada

Laughlin is one of our favorite inexpensive getaways. We can get a hotel room and food fairly inexpensively. We then use it as a base to go exploring things in the area.

One of our favorite stops is in Oatman Arizona about 30 minutes or so away from Laughlin. In 1915, two miners struck a $10 million gold find, and within a year, the town's population grew to more than 3,500. In 1921, a fire burned down many of the smaller shacks in town, and three years later, the main mining company, United Eastern Mines, shut down operations for good.

The picture of the valley is from the top of Sitgreaves pass. Today Oatman survives on tourists due to it being located on Route 66 and also because of the wild burros. When the miners left they left their burros behind and Oatman has a thriving population of wild burros that come into town for the tourists to feed them. Clark Gable and Carol Lombard honeymooned at the Oatman Hotel March 18, 1939.
