Seattle

We were in Seattle for about 48 hours that stretched over 3 days. Most of the time it was overcast and we even got some rain. But the sun did come out one day  for a few hours<grin>. While we were in town they were having a hemp festival and boy was it crowded. We did take a tour of the city and also an underground Seattle tour where you learn a lot about how Seattle was started.

The picture to the left is at Pike's Market. Inside the place was so crowded it was almost impossible to walk. It was a pretty interesting place to visit. If I am ever there again I would like to be there during the week when it is not so crowded.  Further down on the right is the original first Starbucks coffee. One night we took the ferry over to Bainbridge Island and had a wonderful dinner. The ride back seeing the city lights was very nice.

The picture in the lower left is of the famous flying fish. Whenever somebody buys a fish the fish mongers throw the fish. In this case the customer is the one trying to catch it. The State Hotel is in an area called Pioneer Square which was the original settlement of Seattle. The early building were all wooden and most burned in the Seattle fire of 1889. They rebuilt all of brick. But alas they built in an area that flooded with the tide and often brought in sewage. At some point they decided to fill in the street and in affect raised the streets to what was the second floor.
