The Antelope Valley Indian Museum is located about 15 miles east of Lancaster
CA in the upper desert area. It is a California State park that recently reopened
after undergoing a 4 year stabilization project to protect the building and
it's collections. Air conditioning was installed and many of the collections
were put behind glass. Howard Edwards fell in love with the area around Piute
Butte and homesteaded in the area in 1928. He started building a home with an
area he called his Antelope Valley Indian Research Museum. |

The home was built to look like a Swiss Chalet on the outside and on the
inside it used and was built into the local rocks. Many of Edward's hand
lettered information plaques about the displays are still used. Grace Wilcox
Oliver bought the property and in the 1940's opened it as the Antelope
Valley Indian Museum. She added her own collections to the museum. |

The museum is staffed by a park ranger that is very enthusiastic about the
building and very informative. There were also 3 volunteers in the
different rooms who were very happy to tell you all about the particular
displays in their rooms. There is art work everywhere, on the walls and
the ceilings. |
