Ohio Amish Areas

Ohio has the largest Amish population in the world followed by Pennsylvania then Indiana. When we lived in Ohio we always loved to take a drive through them. On the motorcycle we would often head for Trumbull and Geauga counties. The picture to the left is in Mesopotamia in front of the End of the Commons General Store. This store has really expanded since the last time we were there. They used to specialize in bulk foods and that has now become a small portion of the store.

The rest of the pictures are all in Holmes county. Every schoolhouse has a baseball field but what we found interesting is many of the one room school houses have grown in size and are now two floors. The Amish tend to have lots of kids in order to have help on the farm. When the children get older they divide the farm lands and the children then build their homes on the farm. We were seeing a lot more homes then we used to see 10 to 15 years ago.

It was a stunning fall as the leaves were very colorful. We went on a Sunday and things are always quiet on Sundays. All the businesses are closed and the Amish are at Church. They go to a local farm and not a formal church building. You will come across a farm with 20 or more black buggies and you know they are gathered there for church There used to be a lot of dirt and gravel roads in the area and we had a hard time finding any. They were the roads we loved to go driving down because they were the more remote and less traveled roads.
