I keep a list of things and places I want to go see and do. Three different
times I have had the Borrego Springs Peg Leg Smith Liars Contest on our calendar.
We have even had motel reservations a few times that ended up getting canceled
in the past. But n 2012 we finally made it. But, I was also aware of the art
work that is taking off like crazy in Borrego Springs. When we went they were
up to 139 of them and I am sure there are more now. |

The statues are all on property owned by Dennis Avery called Galleta Meadows
and they were created by Ricardo Breceda of Perris CA. Dennis is part owner
of the Avery-Dennison Corporation. The statues started out to be just
of animals that would have or could have roamed the are in prehistoric
times. They are all over the place and some are very large. The sea serpent
is about 300 ft in length and crosses the road. Well.... back to the main
reason we went, the annual Liars contest. The contest is held on the first
Saturday in April as dusk at the Peg Leg Smith Monument. It has been going
on for like 40 years or so now. |

The contest went about 90 minutes in length. Story tellers are supposed to
keep their stories 5 minutes in length maximum and at some point the
story has to be about or at least mention Peg Leg Smith. There were some
truly good story tellers who even dressed in costumes to fit the story
they were going to tell. I think everybody won a used trophy of some
sorts. The master of the ceremony did a really good job between stories to
entertaining the crowd of about 100 people. We may well go back
again another year. |
