What weighs 680,000 lbs and will be a piece of art you walk under? It's
Levitated Mass, designed by artist Michael Heizer. It will be a 456 ft. slot in the
ground over which this big granite rock will be placed at the Los Angeles
County Museum of Art (LACMA) . It seems the artist
conceived this piece of art in 1968 but not until 2011 did he find the right
rock. |

The moving rig is 295 ft long and is pulled by two pullers in the front and
pushed by as many as 4 pushers from the back each at 600 HP for a total of
3,600 HP. There are 22 dollies that are radio controlled to turn the rock.
The rock will travel only at night between 11 PM and 5 AM. The route it
takes is not a direct route as it had to be mapped out for bridges that
could handle the weight and overhead lines and lights that could be moved.
It travels at a maximum speed of 5 Mph. |

The trip was originally planned for 9 days but is now up to 11 days. The
pictures on this page are from its stop in Ontario. There was quite a
crowd around to see it and a few TV trucks filming. The rock is shrink
wrapped to protect it. Not sure to protect it from what though. This is on
the news every night. |
