We have driven though or past Tehachapi a number of times over our years in
California and always said we wanted to one day explore the city. Well, that
time came and we spent a weekend in Tehachapi. We found a number of good
restaurants and a fun downtown area to explore. They had a historic downtown
walking tour, although getting a map for this was not easy. Tehachapi is at an
elevation of almost 4,000 feet and lies between the Mojave desert and the San
Joaquin valley. The big tourist attraction in the area is the Tehachapi Loop,
a popular thing for railroad fans. |

The Tehachapi Museum is a wonderful place with the history of the area and
as I write this I see they now have the walking tour on line. I learned
while there that sometimes web masters take advantage of places like this
and charge a lot of money to update web sites. Since I take care of and
manage the web site for the Barstow Route 66 Museum for free I was surprised
to learn this. |

The Tehachapi Depot is a restored Santa Fe Train Depot and is absolutely
beautiful. They also have people giving free tours of the Depot providing
a lot of great history. When the Depot was first being restored in 2009 it
ended up being burned to the ground by some people that had been shooting
off bottle rockets. The old signage along main street for the businesses
is pretty cool. The Burger Spot offers Ostrich burgers and there are a
number of Ostrich farms in the area. |
