The Titan Missile Museum is part of PIMA Air and Space Museum and is the only
Titan II site open to the public. We had a Tuesday tour scheduled with one of
the crew member who had worked at the complex. The Titan II Missiles were a
strategic part of the US policy during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. |

The Titan II was capable of launching from its underground silo in 58
seconds and could deliver a nine megaton thermonuclear warhead to its target
more than 5,500 miles away in less than thirty minutes. For more than two
decades, 54 Titan II missile complexes across the United States stood "on
alert" 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Depending on which side of the
fence you are on it either heightened the threat of nuclear war or prevented
Armageddon and certain death. |

If in the Tucson area it is a place well worth visiting to provide a bit
of history on the US and the Cold War. I can vaguely recall some of the
drills as little kids in the 60's on what to do in case of nuclear attack.
Civil Defense Shelters and fallout shelters. |
