San Gabriel Mountains

When our daughter was in town on the last day we took a drive up to Wrightwood through Lone Pine Canyon. This is one of my favorite times to drive up there because Lone Pine Canyon has the largest concentration of Yucca's I have seen anywhere in California and they are so so cool when they are in bloom. The rocks to the left are called Mormon Rocks because when the area was first settled the Mormon's came down the Cajon Pass and set up near these rocks. The odd formation and tilt of the rocks is because they are on the San Andreas Fault.

They bloom in late spring / early summer. The stalk that has the flowers shoots up several feet in a matter of a few weeks then flowers. Once it flowers the stalk dies. The Yucca Flower is the state flower of New Mexico.

After lunch in Wrightwood we drove a short distance on the Angeles Crest Highway for a view looking south at the mountains. Angeles Crest Highway is 66 miles in length of 2 lane road through the San Gabriel mountains. Our house is just on the other side of this mountains in this area. It is only an hour or so drive to take visitors up here and give them a great view of the mountains and also the beauty of desert and Lone Pine Canyon.
