The Hollywood Museum is old Fire Station 27 opened on July 1 1930. When it opened
it was not completely done. It was also the largest Fire Station west of the
Mississippi. They are open on Saturdays from 10:00 AM till 4:00 PM. The Fallen
Firefighters Memorial outside the building has a listing of all LA
Firefighters who have died in the line of duty. The building was damaged in
the 1994 Northridge earthquake but was saved from the wrecking ball and
restored to it earlier appearance for use as a museum. |

They have equipment dating back as late as the 1880s. The building is
20,000 sq feet in size. There are 6 poles from the upper floor the
firefighters would slide down. It looked easy from below but upstairs.. it
is like hmm this is a long way down. The station protected / served the Hollywood
area for more then 60 years. It was also used as a location to film movies
including the 3 Stooges. The museum has several old fire engines, artifacts
and historical firefighting equipment, some dating from the 1880s. There is
also a research library and a learning center where fire and life safety
lessons are taught. |

There are wonderful photos on the walls. The upper floor is where the bunk
house and lockers were. There is only one bed left to show you what the
accommodations looked like. The museum was staffed by firefighters who had
worked there when we visited and provided excellent first hand information and
stories about the place. |
