Scotty's Castle is in Death Valley National Park located in the Grapevine Mountains. The castle did not actually belong to Scotty, he was a con man who became friends with millionaire Albert Johnson and convinced him to invest in the Death Valley Area. Johnson built the Spanish Colonial Revival style building in 1922. Scotty, actually name Walter Scott, took care of the mansion for the Johnson's who came on occasion to visit.

Today you can take ranger led tours of the castle. The ranger will be  in period costume and this is the only way you can see the inside of the castle.

They even allowed flash photography which surprised me. The inside is kept dark to protect the furnishings and materials. But once you get home and look at the photos you can see more then you saw when you were there because the flash lights it up.
