Skagway was an interesting town and we took a history tour that started at the
gold rush cemetery then up to the pass. But it was so foggy you couldn’t see
30 feet away so you could not see the views. When we got back into town I
wandered the streets taking pictures while Karen shopped. It was an
interesting town and notice the sidewalks are all wooden. They do keep the
town freshly painted and use a lot of bright colors. We ate at the Red Onion
built in 1897. The Onion operated as a bordello and the classiest dance hall
and saloon in the bustling gold rush town of Skagway. |

As of the 2010 census, the population was 920. However, the population
doubles in the summer tourist season in order to deal with more than 900,000
visitors. The port of Skagway is popular for cruise ships and there was only
one other ship in port with us since it was very early in their season. That
was nice because the town as now too crowded. |

They of course have plenty for tourists to do when the ships arrive from
train rides, to large motorcar tours to bus tours. The city itself was fun
to take and photographs. The picture below shows our small cruise ship
next to one of the larger ships. |
