While in the Salt Lake City area we visited a number of sites including "This
Is the Place Heritage Park" where Brigham Young first saw the Salt Lake
Valley. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe
that Young had a vision shortly after they were exiled from Nauvoo, Illinois.
In the vision, he saw the place where the Latter-day Saints would settle and
"make the desert blossom like a rose" and where they would build their State
of Deseret. The State of Deseret was a provisional state of the United States,
proposed in 1849 by Latter-day Saints settlers in Salt Lake City. The
provisional state existed for slightly over two years and was never recognized
by the United States government. The name derives from the word for "honeybee"
in the Book of Mormon. |

Today there is a park and monument built around the area. While driving
through Utah on the way to Salt Lake City we went through Provo. Provo is
where the headquarters of Novell is. I made my career change from a
mechanical design
engineer to a computer network guy by computerizing and networking the
engineering department where I worked. In the early 90s Novell Netware was
the predominant PC networking system and I got certified and used Netware. |

Ok I digressed a bit. Back to the Salt Lake City (SLC) area. Park City Utah
is about a 30 minute drive from SLC. I wanted to go see this 2002 host city
and park where the 2002 winter Olympics were held. I was a bit surprised at
how tight it was around the ski jumps because when you see it on TV the
place is mobbed with people. The sun was at a funny angle so it was hard to
get a good photograph. sigh.. sometimes you just have to take what you get. |
