Our Yard |

As part of our journey going green, so far we have installed solar power and drive a
hybrid, we decided it was time to take out the grass in the front yard. For
gosh sake we live in an arid climate and water is becoming precious and scarce.
Anyway, we decided it was time to cut down on water waste. Of course the
picture at the left with green grass was before we started. |

The first step was to kill of all the grass using round up. It takes about 3
to 4 weeks for it to all die off. In the next picture below the grass has
all been removed and they painted on a general layout of the design. Part of
the waterwise landscape is the irrigation system. There are no above ground
sprinklers. All watering is done below ground for the plant roots. There is
no spray to evaporate. Then it is controlled by a system that includes a
weather monitoring system. Currently, in the middle of summer it is only
watering about once every 8 days. |

The pictures at the bottom are right after it was completed. A month later
many of the plants have flowers and have already grown. I suspect by next
year the yard will be filed in nicely and my water bill will have gone down.
This may not be for everybody but we like it. No more grass to water and mow
and no more wasting water. We have significantly reduced our carbon
footprint. |
