Mt. Washington in New Hampshire is the highest peak in New England at 6,288 ft. It is known for its changing weather and we were told that we were very lucky because it is often shrouded in clouds/fog and we had a very clear day. The peak held the record for the highest recorded wind speed of 231 Mph during the 20the century. The bus stopped at a beautiful covered bridge for everybody to get out and take a short walk and bathroom break on the way there. The leaves were just starting to turn colors and made for a pretty drive. |

The COG railway was really a unique ride and incredibly steep with an average grade of over 25% and a maximum grade of 37.41%. The first paying customers rode the railway on August 14, 1868. The railway has been in continuous operation ever since with interruptions for the two world wars. This was our first of 5 trains we would take on our journey through New England. |
