Our first stop in Iowa was the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in Walcott. The museum has over 100 antique trucks, each with a story to tell. All are expertly displayed and cared for. We were both surprised how much we enjoyed it and how long we spent here. In Wilton Iowa we stopped at the Candy Kitchen. It is an ice cream parlor and soda fountain founded in 1867, and it is considered to be the oldest continuing business of its type in the United States. While in Iowa we stopped in Brooklyn to see John Wayne's boyhood home. There we had lunch at the Classic Diner and Ice Cream. They had a local specialty called a “Hamburger Pie”. It was hamburger meat cooked in a tomato sauce, green beans on top, then mashed potatoes placed on top and baked. Karen has already made something similar at home. |

We also had to stop in Winterset Iowa to see John Wayne's birthplace and museum. While in town we went to the square and ate at the Northside cafe where Clint Eastwood filmed the bridges of Madison County. We had a marinated pork tenderloin sandwich there that was just fabulous. In Grinnell Iowa we walked around town taking pictures. The picture in the lower right is Grinnell. For dinner we had an Iowa specialty called a loose meat sandwich. In fact we ended up having a lot of very good meals in Iowa. |
