On the way to the ferry we stopped at the Middle Bay Interpretive Center. As often happens I went out wandering taking pictures. This was really a very tiny village. Middle Bay, like Red Bay, is another harbour that Basque whalers used in the summer during the late 1500’s. Middle Bay is a small fishing village with a population of thirty-three permanent residents (2016), but in the summer seasons more people go there to fish. |

After Middle Bay we headed for the ferry MS Qajaq to St. Barbe, Newfoundland and on to our hotel in St. Anthony, (Pop 2,258). The MS Qajaq was built in 2010 and then refurbished in 2018. It went back in service in January of 2019. The passenger deck can hold 300 passengers and the two vehicle decks can hold 120 vehicles and 8 tractor trailers. I have never been on a ferry ship quite this large. Crossing the Straight of Bell Isle takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. |
