Scrap African Mahogany

After I built a coffee table for Karen I had a left over piece of wood. It was beautiful quarter sawn African Mahogany so I decided to get fancy and make a picture frame with it. I had to use my router, table saw, miter saw and of course a sander.

The first step was to cut the 6 foot piece into 2 3 footers. Then I used the router with a 1/4 round over bit to round one edge of the boards on both sides. I set the depth so that I ended up with a small shoulder on the round over. For this operation I used a gripping mat and did it with the boards sitting on a table top.

The next step is to use the table saw to cut this rounded strip off. I will make a groove in the larger pieces to inlay this strip.

I should have taken more pictures of the steps involve here but forgot. I mounted the router in the router table and using a 3/4 flat bit cut a 3/4 wide slot in the top of  the boards. Then I cut a rabbit on the bottom of the board to hold the glass and the picture. Finally I used the 1/4 round over bit again and rounded each edge of the boards.

The next step would be to glue the small strips (inlay) I cut off into the slot I cut on the top of the boards.

This picture shows the finished profile of a piece of the frame after I applied a wiping varnish finish. No stain, just a wiping varnish.

Next I cut the angles on the 4 side with the miter saw and glued and nailed the frame together. Now I just need to get an 8 X 10 glass and picture and put it in the frame. This makes a fun, challenging piece to make that uses a lot of different tools and uses up your scrap wood.
