Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site

The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site is located at Moton Filed in
Tuskegee Alabama. This was the locaton for training of the pilots knwn as the
Tuskegee Airmen. They have two hangers with planes and displays and a movie
theater that shows a short movie on the history. Moton filed is named after
Tuskegee Institute principal Robert Russa Moton. During WWII the military
selected Tuskegee Institute to train African American pilots. The Tuskegee
Airmen overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly
respected fighter groups of World War II. They proved conclusively that
African Americans could fly and maintain sophisticated combat aircraft. |

In Tuskegee the Tuskegee Institute campus was designated a National
Historic Site by the National Park Service. The school was founded on July
4, 1881, as the Tuskegee Normal School for Colored Teachers. The campus also
has the Booker T Washington Museum. The campus is very pretty and the museum
was very interesting. |
