Prattville, Alabama, is steeped in cotton gin history. Founded
by industrialist Daniel Pratt in the 1830s, the town's namesake built a
factory that became the world's largest producer of cotton gins. The
Prattville factory supplied gins to plantations across the South and even
internationally, fueling the expansion of cotton production and unfortunately,
slavery. Though cotton gin production ceased in 2010, Prattville is still
working to revitalize the historic factory site, grappling with its complex
legacy. |
