Valley of the Gods is nicknamed "Miniature Monument Valley".
Winding through the valley's heart, a bumpy gravel road offers glimpses of
isolated buttes, colossal pinnacles, and vast, sun-drenched vistas that
stretch towards eternity. Valley of the Gods offers similar scenery without
the tribal restrictions; it is located on BLM land and is open for hiking,
backpacking and camping. You can camp pretty much anywhere and be by
yourself. |

Asphalt stretches into the distance, a shimmering ribbon
cutting through the vast, arid canvas of Monument Valley. This iconic vista,
immortalized in the film "Forrest Gump," reveals itself at Forrest Gump
Hill, a humble turnoff along the scenic Highway 163. There are many people
stopping at pull offs and standing in the road to take the picture seen in
the movie "Forrest Gump" where he announces he is tired and is going to go
home after running for 3 years. On the way there you will go through Mexican
Hat and Goosenecks state park. The San Juan River makes a series of tight
turns - goosenecks - below this viewpoint. The river has carved a deep
canyon here, dropping about 1,000 feet below the viewpoint. |
