Mono Lake

Whenever we’re driving Highway 395 through the Eastern Sierras, we always make time to stop at Mono Lake. There’s something almost otherworldly about the place. The strange tufa towers rising from the water create such a surreal landscape, and depending on the time of day or the weather, the lake can look completely different. Some of my favorite photos have come from early mornings when the light is soft, or late evenings when the sky reflects off the water. It’s no wonder Mono Lake was used in Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here album artwork—the image of the diver among the tufas captures the same dreamlike feeling you get when you’re standing there in person.

After exploring the lake, we usually head over to Whoa Nellie Deli, which is one of those hidden gems you’d never expect to find inside a Mobile gas station. The food is way beyond what you’d imagine for a roadside stop—creative, fresh, and honestly some of the best we’ve had on our travels. Sitting outside with a plate of their food while taking in the Sierra views is one of those simple but perfect travel moments we look forward to every time.
