Kansas was one of five states we had never visited, even though
I had tried planning a trip there three different times over the past eight
years. Each time, something seemed to get in the way and we had to cancel.
Life has a way of doing that. But this year, we finally made it happen.
Instead of flying and renting a car, we climbed into our motorhome, Motorvator,
and pointed it east. Colby, Kansas, became more than just a stop on a map — it
was the beginning of a long-awaited journey finally realized.
Not everything I had once planned to see was still there.
The Evel Knievel Museum in Topeka had recently closed and is moving to Las
Vegas. That was a bit disappointing, but travel is like that — things change,
places evolve, and sometimes the memories we hoped to make take a different
shape. In a way, that’s part of the adventure. |

One stop, though, meant more than just sightseeing. I had to
visit the St. Francis Motorcycle Museum because they had a bike just like
mine — a 1993 Honda Goldwing SE in blue and white. That color combination
was made for only one year, and very few were produced. In all my years of
riding, I only ever saw one other on the road. I owned mine for 29 years
before selling it a few years ago. I rode motorcycles for 49 years before
finally hanging up my helmet. Standing there and seeing that bike again
brought back decades of memories — open roads, long trips, and the simple
freedom that only a motorcycle can give. This area of Kansas is pretty dang
flat for sure. |
