Dodge City is an iconic city of the American West, known as the “Cowboy Capital of the World” and once called the “Wickedest Little City in America.” Its reputation was forged during its lawless frontier days and by legendary figures who walked its streets, including Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and Doc Holliday. In one picture I am enjoying a beer with Doc although he may be drawing a gun on me. The other picture is Karen and me with Wyatt Earp.

While visiting Dodge City, we took a trolley tour and learned about the city’s modern cattle industry. The two major meat packers in the area, Cargill and National Beef , can process up to 12,000 cattle per day. We also saw some enormous feedlots where cattle are fattened before processing.

The Boot Hill Museum provides a fascinating look into the city’s history. The museum also features a recreated Historic Front Street that captures the feel of the Old West. Unfortunately, many of the original historic buildings were torn down years ago, so the city has been gradually rebuilding portions of the district to preserve its frontier heritage.
