The 2025 movie Superman, directed by James Gunn, was primarily filmed in Cleveland. The city served as the main backdrop for Metropolis, paying tribute to the fact that Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, were from Cleveland. The library hosts a  permanent display honoring   Superman's Cleveland roots, featuring a larger-than-life statue by David Deming and memorabilia. The library is also home to the John G. White Collection, which includes the world's largest chess collection and rare miniature books.

The building itself is Beaux-Arts neoclassical style, it was part of the 1903 Group Plan to create a unified civic center for Cleveland. There is a second building that can be reached through a tunnel called the Louis B Stokes Wing is a modern high-rise designed to complement the original building by using marble from the same quarry. It features a dramatic curved glass façade and offers sweeping views of the city from its 10th-floor lobby. They had an Alred E Neuman Superman action figure as part of the display.
