Other ruins |

I don't know too much about this other then it is the ruins of part of a quartz mill. The gold was all contained within quartz and had to be extracted. Imagine.. after busting your butt all day to find some rock that may contain gold you have to drag it over to the mill to bust it up. Then when you have enough you have to haul it to someplace where you can get some money for it. Hmm seems there must be a better way to earn a living. | |
Ruins of Two Gun Bill's Saloon |
It
was said of the early towns in Holcomb Valley that they consisted of ten
grist mills, one sawmill and one quartz mill. This interesting log
structure saw many a gold nugget pass across the table for a glass of Old
Gilt Edge. The early day saloon was not only a place for drinking, it was
the social hall, court house, and city hall of most boom towns and mining
Camps., It was a place to gather during the day when not engaged in
digging or looking for gold, and at night to spin yarns, drink and have a
fling at "Lady Luck." |

The last major gold discovery occurred in 1873 when Barney and Charley Carter were out prospecting for silver. While they were camped on the north side of Baldwin Lake, Barney went to inspect the quartz ledge that was immediately above their camp. His discovery turned out to be a mountain of gold ore. Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin purchased "Carters' Quartz Hill" for $6,000,000. By 1876, Baldwin had 180 men working in his mine and had constructed a 40-stamp mill to process the ore. |
Metzger_mine |
This is an opening to the Metzger Mine. I started my was in but ran into too much water. There had been some thunderstorms today and the day before. Unusual this time of year but at 7,000 ft who knows. The weather can be unpredictable. Maybe another day... |
