The original church was begun in 1790 and completed in 1805. It was
damaged and eventually repaired after earthquakes in 1812 and 1987.
Padre Antonio Cruzado designed and built the church after the Cathedral in
his hometown of Cordoba, Spain.

The Cathedral of Cordoba Spain, after which Mission San Gabriel Arcángel is
designed, was formerly a Moorish Mosque. That is why the Mission has a
Moorish influence with its capped buttresses, narrow windows, and arched
shell decorations. The original walls are more than 4 feet thick, and
some sections through the buttresses are up to 7 feet thick.
