Silverton, Colorado, a charming town is a National Historic Landmark. It boasts a rich mining past evident in its well-preserved Victorian architecture. Take a scenic ride on the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, delve into the town's fascinating history at the Mining Heritage Center Museum, or embark on an outdoor adventure in the surrounding Weminuche Wilderness.

We rode the train from Durango to Silverton in 2006 and it a stunningly breathtaking ride. This time we drove to Silverton from Durango and the drive was beautiful also. Silverton is at an elevation of 9,318 feet and its tourist season is short. There is only one paved street in town. Originally called "Bakers Park", Silverton sits in a flat area of the Animas River valley and is surrounded by steep peaks. Most of the peaks surrounding Silverton are thirteeners. The highest being Storm Peak, at 13,487 feet.
