We rode the train from Durango to
Silverton in 2006 and it a stunningly breathtaking ride. This time we
drove to Silverton from Durango and the drive was beautiful also. Silverton
is at an elevation of 9,318 feet and its tourist season is short. There is
only one paved street in town. Originally called "Bakers Park", Silverton
sits in a flat area of the Animas River valley and is surrounded by steep
peaks. Most of the peaks surrounding Silverton are thirteeners. The highest
being Storm Peak, at 13,487 feet.
